Electric Scooter vs Petrol: Real Running Cost in India

The sticker price of an electric scooter is higher. The five-year cost usually is not. Here is the arithmetic with realistic Indian numbers, so you can plug in your own usage.

Energy cost per kilometre

A typical electric scooter uses about 3 units of electricity per 100 km. At ₹8 per unit, that is roughly ₹0.24 per kilometre. A petrol scooter at 45 km/l with petrol near ₹100 per litre costs about ₹2.22 per kilometre.

Over 12,000 km a year, that gap alone is close to ₹24,000.

Service and consumables

There is no engine oil, air filter, spark plug or clutch on an electric scooter. Routine service is brakes, tyres and a diagnostics check — typically ₹1,000–₹1,500 a year against ₹4,000–₹6,000 for a petrol scooter.

The battery question

Battery replacement is the one large cost EVs carry. With a 1,500–2,000 cycle lithium pack and a three-year warranty, most owners commuting 40 km a day will not replace the pack inside five years. Budget for it in year six or seven, and factor the warranty terms into your purchase decision.
